Week 1: God's pattern for mercy - in the ministry of Jesus
Reading:
Luke 4:16-21; Lk. 10:25-37; Matt. 9:35-38; Matt. 25:31-46
Reflection:
1. What place does Jesus give to acts of mercy in this passage? Why is mercy so important to his ministry and teaching?
2. How important should acts of mercy be to Jesus' followers?
Week Two: God's provision for mercy - in God's law
Reading:
Exodus 22:21-27; Deut. 10:12-19; Ex. 23:9-11; Deuteronomy 15:7-10
Reflection:
1. What reason(s) does God give for his commands to show mercy? Does this cause you to see God's call to mercy in a new way?
2. How would obeying this command provide for the poor in a society?
Week Three: God's perspective for mercy - in the psalms and proverbs
Reading:
Psa. 72:1-14; Psa. 146; Prov. 13:23, 19:7& 15:15; Prov. 14:31 & 19:17; Prov. 21:13, 22:9

1. What do we see in this passage about God's view of the poor?
2. In what ways does this passage help me look at the poor in a new way?
Week Four: God's passion for mercy - in the prophets
Reading:
Isa. 58:1-12; Amos 5:6-15; Ezek. 22:24-31; Jer. 22:13-17
Reflection:
1. How does God communicate his passion for mercy in this passage?
2. How does the passage fill in the blank: My love for God should lead me to ______________?
Week Five: God's plan for mercy - in the epistles
Reading:
1 John 3:14-18; James 2:14-17; 2 Cor. 9:7-13; Acts 4:33-35
Reflection:
1. How important are deeds of mercy in the Christian life?
2. Where should the motivation for our acts of mercy come from?
